How to cope with switching between question types
Treat each question as a fresh start and reset quickly between them. The distinctive difficulty of a cognitive ability test is not any single subject, it is the constant switching, which is where accuracy tends to slip.
A few habits keep the transitions clean:
- Read each question type’s instruction properly, even mid-test. The rules for a spatial item are nothing like those for a verbal one, and carrying the wrong frame across costs marks.
- Do not carry frustration forward. A hard mechanical question you guessed on has no bearing on the numerical one that follows. Let it go.
- Bank the questions in your strong areas first where the format allows moving around, then give the time you have saved to your weaker ones.
Practising the components separately builds the underlying skills, but rehearsing full mixed tests is what trains the switching itself.
How to handle the numerical and verbal sections
Lead with the question, not the material. In both the numerical and verbal sections, most wasted time comes from absorbing a whole chart or passage before finding out what is actually being asked.
In the numerical section, read the question, check the units and headings, then take only the figures you need. The maths rarely goes beyond percentages, ratios and simple arithmetic, so the marks are lost in misreading a table or dividing by the wrong base rather than in calculation.
In the verbal section, decide each answer only on what the passage states. Choose “true” or “false” only where the text clearly supports or contradicts the statement, and “cannot say” whenever it does neither, even if the statement seems likely from what you already know. “Cannot say” is the option candidates most often get wrong, and it is frequently correct.
How to handle the logical, mechanical and spatial sections
Each of these three rewards a different preparation, so it helps to treat them separately. Logical questions test a rule you can work out on the spot, but mechanical and spatial questions reward prior familiarity.
- Logical: isolate one feature at a time, number, position, rotation, shading, size, and find the simple rule that fits every frame before applying it. Where several options fit part of the pattern, the answer obeys all the rules at once.
- Mechanical: this is the one section where prior reading genuinely helps, because it tests specific principles such as load-bearing ropes, levers and pulleys. For a single load-bearing section of rope, for instance, the force needed equals the weight itself.
- Spatial: work from fixed reference points. When matching a net to a 3D shape, check the two ends or a distinctive face and eliminate any option that cannot fold to match.
