How To Approach Non-Verbal Reasoning Questions

Non-verbal questions reward method over staring: work through the features one at a time and the rule appears. This guide covers the approach, then the short list of transformation rules to check.

A methodical approach

Work through one element of the figure at a time rather than trying to read the whole thing at once, because a question that looks complex is usually two or three simple rules running side by side.

A method that works across every type:

  1. Read the question carefully and be sure what it actually asks, whether that is the next in a sequence, the odd one out or the missing cell.
  2. Examine each element separately, then look at the configuration as a whole, applying the rules you spot one at a time rather than all together.
  3. Draw it out where you can. Sketching a rotation or a fold on scrap paper is faster and more reliable than holding it in your head; ask for paper if it is not provided.
  4. Manage your time. Work out roughly how long you have per question and do not burn precious seconds on one you are stuck on. Move on and return to it if time allows.

Because non-verbal questions recur around a small set of themes, the same strategies keep working. The more you practise, the faster you recognise which one to reach for.

The transformation rules to look for

Nearly every logic-based non-verbal question is built from a short list of transformations, and learning them turns the test into recognition rather than guesswork.

  • Rotation: a shape turns by a fixed angle each step.
  • Reflection: a shape flips to its mirror image, which rotation alone can never reproduce.
  • Translation: an element moves a set distance or around the figure.
  • Alternation: something switches on and off, or between states, on a cycle.
  • Number: the count of sides, dots or shapes rises or falls steadily.
  • Size and shading: scale and fill change on their own independent cycle.

For spatial questions the equivalent building blocks are rotation, reflection, folding and unfolding, and assembling or disassembling shapes. In both families, real questions layer two or three at once, so keep checking for a second rule after you have found the first.
