Numerical Reasoning

This psychometric test comprises of a series of questions relating to graphs, percentages and tables whereby you will be asked to analyse data and chose from a set of multiple choice answers. This type of tests is used to measure your numerical ability as well as graph and data interpretation. There is usually between 20 and 25 questions to answer in timed conditions and so it is highly advisable to practice as much as possible.


Verbal Reasoning

This test comprises of a series of paragraphs which you will be required to read and then answer questions on. Your options will be True, False or Cannot Tell. This test will be assessing your analytical, comprehension, language understanding and grammar skills, amongst others. These are also timed so practicing within a time limit is a good idea. It is important to find a balance between reading the passage and answering the questions.


Situational Judgement

This test presents you with a series of challenging scenarios that one might encounter in the workplace and then a number of possible responses to the scenario. You then chose which one you feel is the best way to describe how you would react. As with the rest of the tests you will be timed and so it is important that you read the information properly. It is important to know the company values to ensure your answers are best matched with theirs.


Group Exercise

You will be given a group task, usually involving a meeting or business scenario that you will be expected to provide solutions for within the team. You’ll be assessed on how you perform within the group, whether you show strong leadership skills or better support skills. You must be careful to strike a balance between dominating the group and being too passive.



You will be expected to give a short presentation and a subject provided. You will be given time to prepare and will be allowed to take prompts in with you. This will be assessing your public speaking and presenting skills as well as how you perform under pressure during questions following your presentation. This may also be in the form of a case study.

This is a two-year management development programme whereby you will be trained as a manager in order to make a positive impact on the sector. You will gain valuable experience and learn new skills which will enable you to cultivate a successful career as a leader in local government.

Local government has been going through large changes and so you will have the opportunity to help influence these changes and improve how local councils operate and benefit their communities. You will undertake a series of placements which will engage you in the different areas of local government.

There are four components to this scheme; a national induction event to help start your career journey, a number of placements and projects in a host local environment, a learning and development programme based both locally and nationally and a large support network of people including mentors and managers who will be on site to provide constant training and assistance.

The placements and projects that you will take part in will be based within a strategic or corporate function such as a polity, a customer-facing service delivery area such as housing or a support service such as human resources or finance. These will enable you to gain valuable experience across a range of services. You will have your first placement allocated to you in order to provide you with immediate learning, however, as you progress you will be given the opportunity to decide on future placements depending on your skills and interests.

As well as experience within this industry you will also take part in a series of training and development programmes – which have been accredited by the Institute for the Leadership and Management and each trainee will be supported to work towards an ILM 7 Diploma in Leadership and Management. Along with your fellow trainees, you will undertake six modules over the two-year programme. The content of these will include; Leadership models, new operating models, financial management training, procurement and commissioning, project and people management, engagement, working in a political context, delivering results and developing self.

The NGDP requires trainees to have a certain set of skills – those of which can be found highlighted on their website. It is for this reason that they use the psychometric tests to help with their selection process. All universities and degree disciplines are considered. Different authorities take place each year and so your location will depend on this – you will have the chance to provide preferences on where you will be based should you be successful in your application.
