Irwin Mitchell Virtual Assessment Centre

If successful at the video interview stage, you’ll be invited to attend a virtual assessment center. This is conducted by members of the recruitment team as well as associates and partners.

The Irwin Mitchell Virtual Assessment Centre consists of the following activities:

  • Group exercise
  • Written exercise
  • Interviews

Irwin Mitchell Group Exercise

Irwin Mitchells group exercise helps assess your teamwork skills amongst other candidates.

You’ll be given a task to complete with other applicants whilst assessors observe your interactions and how you approach the activity with others.

This type of exercise is designed to assess collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills.

It’s important to strike a fine balance between listening and talking as well as being a productive team member within the group.

Irwin Mitchell Written Exercise

The written exercise is used to test your analytical skills and problem-solving abilities. The format of it will be different from normal case study-type exercises, with it likely being based on instructions.

You’ll be presented with information that you will be expected to read and analyze and find a solution. It will also be used to test your writing skills, spelling, and grammar.

It is a good idea to practice these types of tests ahead of time, especially if you have a weakness in your spelling and grammar.

Watson Glaser Critical Thinking

You may be required to sit the Watson Glaser Critical Thinking Test (W-GCTA). This test contains five sections designed to find out how strong your analytical and logical reasoning skills are. The assessment measures your ability to logically analyse assumptions, arguments, deductions, inferences and interpreting information.

Irwin Mitchell Interview

During the final interview, candidates can expect to meet with a panel of interviewers, which may include a senior manager, HR representative, and other members of the team. The interview will likely focus on assessing the candidate’s skills, experience, and cultural fit, and may include questions about the company’s values and the candidate’s motivation for working at Irwin Mitchell.

Candidates may also be asked to provide examples of their past experiences and achievements and how they relate to the job role. It is also common for candidates to be asked behavioral or situational questions, where they will be required to provide specific examples of how they have handled challenging situations in the past.

Some common interview questions you might be asked:

  • What are your areas of interest in law?
  • How would you form a strong professional network at IM?
  • Would you consider adapting your communication style when interacting in a work environment
  • When did you last work as a team?
  • What does personal growth mean to you?
  • Why do you want to pursue a career in commercial law?
  • Why Irwin Mitchell?

Irwin Mitchell Tests Tips

1Know Your Employer

Getting to grips with Irwin Mitchell’s ethos and operations is key. As a top law firm, they look for candidates well-versed not only in law but also in the firm’s culture and the broader context in which it operates. So, dive into their history, recent news, and any available case studies. Having this background knowledge can give you context for the type of questions you might face and help you align your answers with their values.

2Mirror the Test Environment

Create a simulation of the test environment to get comfortable with what you’ll face on the big day. Designate a quiet space, set a timer, and take practice tests as if you’re in the actual assessment. This practice can alleviate anxiety and help you manage your time effectively during the real test.

3Understand the Question Types

With a firm like Irwin Mitchell, the tests could range from traditional law-related questions to assessments of your business support acumen. At Practice Aptitude Tests, we offer a variety of test formats that mimic those used by companies like Irwin Mitchell. Familiarize yourself with different question styles to reduce surprises on test day.

4Hone Relevant Skills

While the tests will undoubtedly cover law topics, don’t forget about the non-legal skills crucial to a firm like Irwin Mitchell. Sharpen your reasoning, numeracy, and verbal abilities, as these are often tested in business support roles. You can find targeted exercises on Practice Aptitude Tests to improve these specific skill sets.

5Review and Reflect

After each practice test, take the time to go through your answers. Identify where you went right and where you have room for improvement. This reflective practice can turn errors into learning opportunities and significantly improve your performance over time.
