YAEL Test Tips

1Work to the clock, section by section

Each multiple choice section gives you 20 minutes for 22 questions, so you have just under a minute each. Practice at that pace rather than at a comfortable reading speed.

2Learn the three question types

Sentence completions, restatements and reading comprehension appear in every multiple choice section. Know what each one is asking for before test day so you are not working it out under time pressure.

3Take the easy marks first

Questions rise in difficulty across a section, except reading comprehension, which follows the order of the text. The marks at the start are the cheapest on the paper, so do not stall on a hard item early.

4Plan the essay before you write it

The essay is a third of your score and is marked on content, structure, richness of language and correctness. With only 15 minutes, a short plan is usually worth the time it costs.

5Practice reading under pressure

Timed comprehension practice builds the speed the test rewards. Use the free reading and reasoning tests on Practice Aptitude Tests to train working accurately against a clock.

YAEL Test FAQs

What is the YAEL test?

YAEL is the Hebrew proficiency test set by the National Institute for Testing and Evaluation (NITE) in Israel. Most Israeli institutions of higher education ask for a YAEL score from applicants who did not sit the Psychometric Entrance Test in Hebrew, or whose high school matriculation was in another language.

How long is the YAEL test and what is in it?

The test runs for roughly 90 minutes and has four sections. Three multiple choice sections of 22 questions each give you 20 minutes apiece and cover sentence completions, restatements and reading comprehension. The fourth section gives you 15 minutes to write an essay on a set topic.

How is the YAEL test scored?

Scores run from 50 to 150. Only two of the three multiple choice sections count toward your score, with the third used for quality control, and the multiple choice score carries two thirds of the weight against one third for the essay. There is no pass mark.

What is the difference between YAEL and YAELNET?

YAELNET is the computerized version of the same test and NITE states it is identical in content. It runs year round at NITE test centers and on some campuses, scores are available within ten days, and you must wait at least 35 days before sitting either version again.

How should I practice for the YAEL test?

Read Hebrew prose against a timer, because two thirds of the score comes from timed multiple choice at just under a minute per question. You can build the same comprehension and inference skills in English with the free practice tests on Practice Aptitude Tests.
