Virgin Media Tests

A brainchild of Sir Richard Branson, Virgin Media is one of the largest British telecoms businesses, with a 20% share of the UK broadband market and 15% share of the UK’s TV distributors. This makes it a highly sought-after career destination for both graduates and more experienced professionals.

Careers at Virgin Media

Career opportunities at Virgin Media cover the following sectors:

  • Technology and Operations
  • Construction and Network
  • Programme and Project Management
  • Corporate functions
  • Sales and Customer Service

Candidates interested in graduate schemes can apply to two business areas to increase their chance of success, and are required to have at least a 2:1 degree (grade of 60% or higher), or a 2:2 and a Master’s degree. Applications tend to open in autumn, around September and October every year, for roles starting in September the following year.

Besides the usual 25 days’ holiday and pension scheme, being a part of Virgin also means special gifts and time off on your birthday, staff discount to Virgin’s products, medical benefits for yourself and your family, and share plans.

Virgin Media has a fairly standard recruitment process for both experienced and entry-level roles. This starts with registering on their career page and filling out an online application, which takes about 45 minutes; no CV is required.

The next step is a situational judgement test, and occasionally, other skill-based aptitude tests, depending on the role and the test provider used by Virgin, followed by an automated video interview.

Once candidates have passed these hurdles, they will get the opportunity to visit the office on an assessment day and to speak directly to future mentors.

Online application form

Rather than sticking with the conventional CV and cover letter, Virgin Media wants to gain an in-depth understanding of applicants, their motivations for applying and their achievements.

These are gathered alongside other basic personal information and education or work history, via questions on an online form. Candidates can describe their background and ambition in their own words.

Virgin Media situational judgement test

Like many other employers, Virgin Media uses situational judgement tests to get to know candidates and what makes them tick. These are similar to personality tests, but more specific to professional situations.

By presenting hypothetical workplace scenarios, this test digs deep into how an individual would react and make decisions in work environments, which helps Virgin decide whether an applicant could potentially be a good fit.

A situational judgement test often has 15 to 20 multiple-choice or ranking questions, depending on the test publisher, and no time limit, as it is not a skill-based psychometric assessment. The only way to make the most of this is to be honest in your answers, to yourself and to the employer.

On-demand video interview

This refers to an online automated video interview, carried out via a digital recruitment platform. There are usually three to five questions about one’s professional or educational background, achievements and overall suitability for the role, before a more personalised interview at a later stage.

Applicants can record themselves answering these in their own time and are often given three attempts. Good lighting and audio, a non-distracting and quiet surrounding as well as thorough preparations are essential to pass this round.

Discovery Day

This is basically an assessment centre. To embrace a culture of curiosity and belonging, Virgin wants to make this stage about you exploring your future work environment, as much as it is about them selecting the right candidates.

The Discovery Day takes place in November up until mid-December, with invites sent out seven days before each discovery day.

There will be interactive and competitive group and individual tasks after some introductory presentations by Virgin’s mentors and buddies. These activities normally last a full work day with a lunch break and other smaller breaks. For those who come from afar to attend, travel costs can be reimbursed.

Virtual or face-to-face interview

Note that these final interviews can be virtual as well as face-to-face. Be prepared to go into more detail regarding your most relevant experiences, knowledge and ideas, as well as the unique attributes you can contribute to the business.
