EMAT Tests

If you are applying for a Masters in Management at the ESCP Europe Business School, then you may be asked to complete the EMAT assessment.

About EMAT

With only 150 spaces available each year, this is a competitive opportunity that requires the following criteria:

A Bachelor’s degree with at least three years study from a European country A maximum of 180 ECTS credits; one year of study can be completed in France Under 30 years of age In some cases a GMAT score over 610

The selection process includes the following, and each section carries a weighted percentage that will be combined to form an overall score:

Application form / profile review: 10% Verbal and Numerical Reasoning Tests: 35% Individual Interview: 35% Group Interview: 10% Foreign Language test: 10%

Below we have provided more information relating to each of the above sections:

EMAT Application Form / Profile Review

This section will review your academic history alongside your exposure to different cultures and countries, your work experience and your extracurricular activities. Whilst most of this information is gathered via your CV, the full application is approximately 10 pages long and so requires detail and thoroughness. Within the application there are two questions that are heavily weighted:

Describe a multi-cultural experience that has influenced you What do you feel has been your most important work experience?

It is important that you can associate your experience with the ethos of ESCP. They’re practice of a multi-cultural school means that you need to demonstrate relevant experience that equips you to fit into this environment and excel. The idea behind their ethos is that everyone learns from each other and so it is important to showcase examples where you have committed to this type of learning previously.

You will need to score highly within this section in order to be put through to the second stage of the selection process.

EMAT Verbal and Numerical Reasoning Tests

EMAT use SHL to provide two psychometric tests for this part of the selection process. These include a verbal and numerical reasoning test. Both tests are 15 minutes long, and are taken at the location you have applied to (they are not completed via the internet).

The verbal reasoning test will present you with a passage of text relating to a chosen topic and a number of statements. You will need to determine whether these statements are true, false or cannot say. Like all verbal reasoning tests, your answer must be solely based on the information provided, and not external knowledge.

The numerical reasoning test relies on your ability to analyse and influence tables and graphs. The format is multiple-choice, typically offering five possible answers. Be careful not to fall for answers where the decimal point is in the wrong place or where extra zeros have been added!

EMAT Individual Interview

This interview is typically 45 minutes and is used to understand what drives you to be successful at EMAT. They will be looking for you to be clear on how you want to utilise the opportunity to study at EMAT within your future career and how you will impact society to encourage and influence multicultural behaviours.

We would recommend being able to highlight key reasons that have attracted you to EMAT and what your overall goal is. It is important that you understand what will be expected of you during your qualification and have done your research on EMAT as an establishment.

EMAT Group Interview

The group interview exercise is used to identify how you handle working within a group faced with difficult challenges. You will be given a description of a political issue and be given a role within that group. You will then be expected to work through various arguments and subsequently debate these amongst the group of candidates. The key here is to take part without being overbearing, express insightful knowledge relating to your arguments and communicate fluidly.

EMAT Foreign Language Test

This test will be completed in your second language, whether that be French, German, English or Spanish.

There will be two parts to the test, which include an interview in your second language and a written test.

The interview will be 15 minutes long and will require you to prepare a five-minute presentation based on one of six different topics that will be provided to you. You will present your ideas to a panel of judges and this will be followed with 10 minutes of questions and discussion. The topics often raised include the country of your choice of second language, Economics, Politics, Culture, Philosophy, Literature and current affairs.

The written test will provide you with a 500-word essay. You will need to condense this down into a conclusion consisting of no more than 150 words.
