Polish State Certificate Exam Tips

1Find your weakest module first

The pass mark applies to each written module separately, so one weak module fails the whole exam. Score each module on its own before you decide where your study time goes.

2Practice grammar productively

The grammatical correctness module asks you to produce forms, not only to recognize them. Supplying a correct case ending is a much harder skill than spotting one in a list.

3Write to the set task types

Written expression gives you a choice of task sets with specific text types. Practice producing those types to length and to time rather than writing freely.

4Rehearse the oral out loud

You speak from drawn material in front of a board, which is not the same as conversation. Work from pictures and short texts, and keep talking for the full time.

5Build up to the full sitting

The written part runs up to 190 minutes at B1 and up to 250 minutes at B2 and C1. Practice at that length so that concentration is not what fails you on the day.

Polish State Certificate Exam FAQs

What is the State Certificate Examination in Polish as a Foreign Language?

It is Poland’s official examination in Polish as a foreign language, run by the State Commission for the Certification of Proficiency in Polish as a Foreign Language. Passing it earns a state certificate at a stated CEFR level, and the certificate does not expire.

What levels can I take the Polish state exam at?

Adults can sit it at any of the six CEFR levels from A1 to C2. A separate version written for candidates aged 14 to 17 runs from A1 to B2. You register for the single level you want certified rather than working up through them.

What is the structure of the Polish state certificate exam?

There are two parts. The written part has four modules, covering listening comprehension, reading comprehension, grammatical correctness and written expression. The oral part is taken in front of an examination board, working from a drawn set of textual and pictorial material.

What is the pass mark for the Polish state exam?

For adults at B1 you need at least 50% in each module of the written part and 50% in the oral part. For adults at B2, C1 and C2 the threshold is 60% in each written module and 60% in the oral part. The rule applies module by module, so one weak module can fail the whole exam.

How long does the Polish state certificate exam take?

For adults at B1 the written part runs up to 190 minutes and the oral part takes around 15 minutes. At B2 the written part runs up to 250 minutes with an oral part of around 15 minutes, and at C1 up to 250 minutes with an oral part of around 20 minutes.
