What Are SHL Deductive Reasoning Tests?
Established in 1977, SHL is a global talent solutions business providing data-driven solutions and services to employers. The company designs and develops several products enabling employers to recruit and develop their employees, one being psychometric assessments.
There are a variety of psychometric assessments used by employers to evaluate individuals on the necessary abilities needed for roles, including deductive reasoning tests.
The SHL deductive reasoning test is a form of cognitive assessment assessing a candidate’s ability to find a logical solution to a problem under time pressure.
This online assessment determines whether individuals can take general pieces of information and interpret and evaluate these to reach a logical and reasonable conclusion.
Deductive reasoning is highly valued by employers, particularly in roles where problem-solving and rational decision-making are integral. This skill involves drawing specific conclusions from general information, crucial for navigating complex workplace scenarios and making informed decisions. It’s not just about finding solutions; it’s about doing so logically and systematically, traits sought after in various professional settings.
Deductive Reasoning Vs Inductive Reasoning
The SHL deductive reasoning test is a timed, online assessment. Given this, the number of questions, level of difficulty, and types of questions will vary according to the employer. SHL works with several employers providing bespoke tests.
The SHL deductive reasoning test requires candidates to problem solve by analysing and interpreting scenarios to reach the most logical conclusion.
Test-takers may also be asked to review and analyse the benefits and weaknesses of arguments, evaluating these to draw reasoned conclusions.
There are three formats of SHL deductive reasoning tests available to employers:
- Gamified assessment that provides an immersive experience for the test taker.
- Two non-interactive, multiple-choice format assessments.
While each test differs in the format and style of the questions, all tests are multiple choice and have their own time limit for completion.
SHL Verify G+ Deductive Reasoning Test (Interactive)
The SHL Verify G+ test is an interactive gamified deductive reasoning test. The test differs from other SHL deductive reasoning assessments in that it is interactive and adaptive.
The Verify G+ test also assesses a candidate’s numerical and deductive reasoning skills, so the test is longer than the other SHL deductive reasoning assessments
While this test comprises 30 questions, it is worth noting that the test is split into different sections, each assessing a different ability. Each of the three sections has ten questions and a time limit of 10 minutes for completion.
The Verify G+ test questions ask candidates to resolve situations by reviewing information such as arranging meetings or ranking information.
Questions could also be included where individuals need to evaluate the strength of an argument. To answer the question, candidates may need to either select which of the multiple choice answers is correct or drag and drop the answer according to the question format.
SHL Verify G+ Deductive Reasoning Test (Non-Interactive)
The non-interactive version of the SHL Verify G+ test comprises 18 questions with a time limit of 20 minutes.
In this test, candidates are given a series of questions with between 4 and 5 responses to choose from. Candidates need to read, understand, evaluate and interpret the information to draw the most logical conclusion from what they have been given.
This test comprises three different types of questions:
- Table-related questions where information is given in the form of tabulated data.
- Questions are given in the form of short passages of text. Candidates must evaluate the argument and select which assumption from the options provided is correct.
- Paragraph questions where individuals need to read and understand the information, then select whether the multiple-choice statements that follow are true or false.
Questions in this test may also be adaptive, in that the questions get progressively more challenging depending on how the candidate performs in the test.
SHL CEB Deductive Reasoning Test
The SHL CEB test comprises 18 questions with a time limit of 20 minutes. While this test is similar in terms of the style of questions to the SHL Verify G+ non-interactive test, the CEB test is least commonly used by employers, given the updated and interactive nature of the other two Verify G+ assessments.
Questions in the CEB test measure individuals’ ability to make logical and reasoned conclusions by evaluating the strength and weaknesses of arguments and scenarios.
Questions are presented in the form of short statements. Candidates need to read the statements and select which multiple-choice assumptions are correct based on the two pieces of information they have been provided with.
