A numeracy test is a short, timed assessment of everyday maths: percentages, fractions, ratios, decimals, averages and unit conversions, almost always set as multiple choice questions. It checks whether you can carry those calculations out accurately and quickly, not whether you know advanced mathematics. Employers set one early in an application to confirm you can handle the arithmetic a role involves, before they invest interview time in you.
What is a basic numeracy test?
A basic numeracy test is the entry level version of that assessment. The questions come from the arithmetic most people last met at school, and the format is typically multiple choice, with one correct answer and three distractors.
What makes it a test rather than a maths exercise is the clock. A basic numeracy test draws on cognitive ability as much as arithmetic: reading a problem, seeing which operation it needs, and reaching the answer inside a fixed time.
Numeracy test vs numerical reasoning test
The two are not the same, and the difference decides what you should revise.
A numeracy test asks you to perform a calculation that has already been set out for you: find 15% of a figure, convert a fraction, simplify a ratio. A numerical reasoning test gives you a table or a chart and asks you to work out which figures you need before you calculate anything. The arithmetic in a numerical reasoning test is often easier, while the interpretation is harder.
If your invitation does not say which one you are sitting, prepare for both. The arithmetic underneath is the same.

Worked numeracy test examples
Six questions at the type and difficulty you should expect, worked through in full.
Percentage of an amount. A department of 40 people has 35% working remotely. How many is that? 40 × 0.35 = 14 people.
Percentage decrease. A figure falls from 80 to 68. What is the percentage decrease? The fall is 80 - 68 = 12. Divide by the original figure: 12 ÷ 80 = 0.15, which is 15%. Dividing by 68 instead of 80 is the commonest error in this question type.
Ratio. Split 350 in the ratio 3:4. Add the parts: 3 + 4 = 7. One part is 350 ÷ 7 = 50. The shares are 3 × 50 = 150 and 4 × 50 = 200, and 150 + 200 = 350, which confirms the split.
Unit conversion. A machine produces 1.5 items per second. How many per hour? 1.5 × 60 = 90 per minute, then 90 × 60 = 5,400 per hour. Convert one step at a time rather than in a single jump.
Fraction to percentage. Express 3/8 as a percentage. 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375, so 37.5%.
Mean. Five results are 12, 15, 9, 14 and 10. Add them: 60. Divide by how many there are: 60 ÷ 5 = 12.
Why do employers use basic numeracy tests?
A CV does not show what level of everyday numeracy you have, and self reported confidence is not comparable between candidates. A short test produces one score an employer can read the same way for everyone who applies, which is why it usually sits at the sifting stage rather than at interview.
10 key steps to answer basic numeracy tests
The steps below are the ones that reliably move a score, in the order you should apply them.
Step 1: Read the whole question before you calculate
Most avoidable marks are lost before any arithmetic happens. Read the question through once without touching the numbers, then decide what it is actually asking for.
Pay particular attention to the units, to the direction of a change (an increase or a decrease), and to whether the answer wants a total, a difference or a share.
Re-reading it once you have an answer takes seconds, and catches the mistake that comes from answering the question you expected rather than the one in front of you.
Step 2: Check the calculator rules first
Some numeracy tests allow a calculator and some do not, and the rule changes how you should prepare. Check your invitation before you start revising.
If one is allowed and you are sitting the test at an assessment centre, take your own where the instructions permit it: familiar buttons save the time an unfamiliar keypad costs you.
If no calculator is allowed, your mental arithmetic and your written long multiplication and division are the things to work on, not your speed on a keypad.
Step 3: Work it out on rough paper
Rough paper is usually permitted, and using it properly is a genuine advantage. Write the numbers out rather than holding them in your head, because a figure you have written down cannot be misremembered halfway through a calculation.
Set your working out in full lines so it can be checked. Where several questions share a step, a conversion rate you have already worked out for instance, keep it visible and reuse it instead of calculating it again.
Step 4: Use the answer options to your advantage
The answer options are information, so scan them before you calculate.
If the options are widely spaced, an estimate may be enough to identify the right one without a full calculation. If two options sit very close together, that is a signal to be careful about rounding. Options that differ only by a factor of ten usually mean a unit conversion is being tested.
Ruling out impossible options also protects you: if your final answer is not among the ones left standing, you have caught an error you would otherwise have submitted.
Step 5: Manage your time
Numeracy tests are strictly timed. Work out the time available per question before you start, and keep a rough sense of where you should be at the halfway point.
Your goal is not to answer every question. It is to answer the greatest number correctly within the time allowed, which usually means banking the quick ones and leaving anything that stalls you.
Check the instructions for whether wrong answers are penalised. Where they are not, never leave a question blank.
Step 6: Always check the units
Units are the most common source of a wrong answer in a numeracy test that was otherwise worked correctly.
Check what unit the question gives you and what unit the answer needs. Convert one step at a time, seconds to minutes and then minutes to hours, rather than attempting the whole conversion in one move.
Step 7: Sanity check your answers at the end
Checking each answer as you go is expensive. Work through the whole test first, then use whatever time is left to review.
The fastest review is not redoing the calculation, it is asking whether the answer is plausible. A percentage above 100, a share larger than the total it came from, or a converted figure that has moved in the wrong direction are all errors you can catch in a second or two without any arithmetic at all.
Step 8: Work at your own pace
In an assessment centre it is tempting to measure yourself against how quickly the people around you are turning pages. That tells you nothing about their accuracy, and it costs you concentration.
If you have prepared properly, trust the method you practiced and work steadily through it. Steady and accurate beats fast and careless in a test that is scored on correct answers.
Step 9: Ignore the data you do not need
Many questions include figures that are not needed to answer them. That is deliberate, and handling it is part of what is being assessed.
Read the question first and the data second, so you know what you are looking for before you start reading numbers. Then take only the figures the question requires.
Step 10: Practice under timed conditions
Untimed practice builds accuracy but not speed, and speed is half of what a numeracy test measures. Sit full sets against the clock.
Afterwards, review every question you got wrong and work out whether the cause was the method, the arithmetic or the clock, because the three need different fixes.
