Published by PSI, the SAM test is designed to allow employers to streamline their application process, by focusing efforts on the candidates who match the role criteria.

The SAM test is designed to look at what is considered to be the critical success competencies: those that identify hard-working, safe and productive employees who are going to provide skilled work into the future.

The SAM test is modular, which means that there are five different exams used; the specific questions will depend on the role you have applied for. It lasts between 30 and 70 minutes, and is tailored to the company and personalised to the needs of the job.

The questions are a blend of typical multiple-choice and interactive questions.

The multiple-choice questions do not always have right or wrong answers; they are designed to see how you handle different situations, so it is important to be honest in your answers.

The interactive questions are engaging and realistic simulations of work scenarios that really get you thinking about the actions you would take. They demonstrate your problem-solving skills, as well as how you work methodically and logically when faced with something unfamiliar.

The SAM test is unique in comparison with other mechanical or manufacturing tests, as it is as much about your problem-solving abilities as your job skills. That means that you need to be able to show them that you have the competencies they are looking for.

What does the SAM test assess?

Throughout the assessment, there are several key traits and behaviors that are being tested. You can expect questions based around mechanical reasoning: understanding the physics principles that underpin mechanical systems to answer questions based on things like acceleration, gears and pulleys, and electrical circuits.

Some of the questions in the assessment look at your work-related skills, eg things that are specific to a manufacturing role. These include visual acuity, which is essential when dealing with tiny components or when reading diagrams and schematics, as well as work pace, which makes a difference for productivity.

I need to practice studying – is this how the test is going to be? Because I'm not prepared for it at all. I don't understand what manufacturing is.
