Step 1: Be Efficient
Time is a huge resource and a deciding factor in e-tray exercise. Hence, efficiency will be your best friend.
Now, a lot of people encourage multitasking for more efficient functioning. However, you should avoid it altogether. Multi-tasking, in fact, delays the time spent on finishing a job. It deviates the attention and makes it harder to fully concentrate on one task.
Instead, take one task at a time but be smart about it. Eye-ball all the tasks you have and identify their urgency level. Make a list of a few first tasks that you will tackle.
Step 2: Prioritize the Workload
The tasks given to you while conducting an e-tray exercise will range from “most important” to “least important”. You, as a candidate, must know the difference between the two.
You should firstly prioritize all the time-sensitive jobs. This will help you achieve the core part of the test. You should also not place a lot of attention to menial jobs. However, do not completely forget about them. Keep them at the back of their mind.
Step 3: Identify & Investigate
It is easy to come up with a short solution without thinking too much. However, this strategy will only work on trivial tasks. For the more important jobs, you will have to set aside some time to investigate and address the issue. This is the time to reflect on the knowledge you have acquired until this moment. Try to think of some real-life scenarios, create a list of pros and cons, attempt cost-benefit analysis, etc. Try to understand your recruiter’s expectations. This will allow you to have a linear direction.
Step 4: Trivial Tasks
As mentioned above, keep the trivial tasks aside. But if you can come up with quick solutions then keep solving it as you move ahead. This timeliness and quick thinking reflect your level of understanding of the job. These small details are what make the difference between selected and rejected candidates. So be smart about it.
Step 5: Delegation is Key
As a manager, you must not only be focused on being efficient by maximizing your own work capacity. Rather, you must make use of all the subordinates assigned to you. Delegation is what turns a hard-working manager into a smart-working one. This also shows nurturing mentorship qualities as well as reliable leadership qualities. And these days regardless of the post, these two qualities are very valued.
Being authentic while also being quick-witted is a simple yet not-so-simple way of acing an e-tray assessment. Don’t forget to be calm, composed and strategic in your approach. Be confident in your approaches and decision making. Try to foster cohesiveness in your fictional team of employees.
